Learners
Is TRY free?
Yes. TRY is free for learners.
Which subjects can I practise?
Practice tests and TRY papers: Mathematics, Mathematical Literacy, Technical Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Technical Sciences and Accounting. Past papers, study guides and textbooks cover many more CAPS subjects.
Which grades is TRY for?
Grade 8 to 12. What you can practise depends on your subject and grade.
Can TRY help me choose what to study after school?
Yes. Add your marks in My marks and TRY works out your APS. Future Finder then shows the courses you already meet, side by side, and “What mark do I need?” shows what to aim for in the ones you want.
Which universities and colleges are in TRY?
All 26 public universities (including the universities of technology) and 47 public TVET colleges, with their courses, how to apply, the prospectus and their application dates.
Does TRY help with NSFAS and bursaries?
Yes. TRY explains NSFAS step by step and shows bursaries that fit you, what they cover, who can apply and when they close, and sends you to the official website to apply. Applying for NSFAS and most bursaries is free: never pay anyone to apply.
Will TRY remind me before applications close?
Yes. Tap “Notify me” on a university or college and TRY reminds you about the dates you asked for.
My marks are low. Is TRY for me?
Especially for you. Practice shows exactly which mistakes cost you marks and makes new tests on them, and Future Finder shows every route your marks can take, including TVET colleges.
I’m applying again next year. Can TRY help?
Yes. Your marks, the courses you meet and the closing dates stay in TRY, so you can plan your next application properly.
How does TRY mark my answers?
TRY’s engine knows the answer to every question it makes, and the mistakes learners usually make. When you’re wrong, it names the mistake, for example “you multiplied only the first term in the bracket”. When it isn’t sure, it says so instead of guessing.
Where does the memo for a TRY paper come from?
TRY makes the paper and its memo together. The memo opens after you tap “I’ve finished writing”.
Does TRY work offline?
Past papers, memos and the TRY papers you save open with no signal. Making a new test needs a connection.
Which phones does TRY work on?
Android phones, including everyday ones. iPhone and the app stores are coming soon.
What is Aton?
TRY’s AI helper. Ask it in your own words for a test, a TRY paper, a past paper and its memo, a bursary or a closing date. It says it’s an AI, and it guides you, it doesn’t do your homework or SBA tasks for you.
I found a mistake in a question. What do I do?
Tell us on the contact page with the subject and the question. We fix the engine, so the mistake is fixed for everyone.
Parents
Is TRY safe for my child?
Community posts are checked for contact details and harmful words before others see them, learners are kept apart from unknown adults, and your child can block, mute and report. TRY’s guidelines point to SADAG and Childline when a learner needs help.
What information does TRY keep?
Only what TRY needs: email, the name they choose, date of birth, grade, subjects, and their practice and progress. TRY never sells it and does not show adverts based on it.
My child is under 18. Do I need to agree?
Yes, for learners under 18, a parent or guardian agrees to TRY’s terms. TRY is for learners aged 12 and older.
Can I see my child’s progress?
Not yet, a parent view is planned. Your child can show you their results: each test shows the mark, the level and every mistake.
Schools
Can my whole class use TRY?
Yes. Each learner signs up on their own phone, for free.
Is there a teacher dashboard?
Not yet. TRY is for learners first; a teacher view is on our roadmap.
Can TRY visit our school?
Ask us on the contact page (topic: School). We’d love to.
Partners
How can my organisation support TRY?
Sponsor learners, help with data costs, share official bursary information, fund the work, or give technology. See the Partners page.
How are partners credited?
We agree it together, for example your name on this website and in the app.
Who is behind TRY?
Its co-founders, Mandla Baloyi and Marvin Makhubela, two South African students who build TRY’s app, engine and AI helper. Reach us at [email protected].
