How TRY works inside

Not a chatbot. A marking engine, built from the ground up.

At TRY’s heart is an engine we wrote ourselves. It makes new CAPS questions, knows their answers and their memos, and recognises the mistakes learners actually make, the same way, every time.

The engine

How a question is made.

  1. 1

    Start from the answer

Every question is built backwards from a correct answer, so TRY always knows the answer, and the working that gets there.

  2. 2

    Know the wrong turns

Each question type carries the mistakes learners really make. A wrong answer is matched to a named mistake, not just marked wrong.

  3. 3

    Write the memo

The same steps become the memo: every line, every mark, the way a marker would show it.

  4. 4

    Check it thousands of times

Before a question type goes live, it is generated thousands of times and every one is checked: the answer, the variety, and that every mistake is caught.

Question types per subject

  • Mathematics 141
  • Physical Sciences 40
  • Mathematical Literacy 22
  • Accounting 17
  • Technical Mathematics 16
  • Technical Sciences 9

Each type makes endless new questions: new numbers, new diagrams, new wording.

Whole exam papers, with memos

The engine also builds a whole Paper 1 or Paper 2: the right topics, the right mix of easy and hard, the marks adding up exactly, numbered like the real exam, printed as a PDF with its memo.

Fast, and built to scale

A new question in a blink.

The engine doesn’t look questions up. It builds them, with their answers and memos, as fast as learners ask. Each question is worked out on its own, so serving more learners is simply a matter of running more copies.

Learns from every try

Practice that gets more personal.

1

Every mistake has a name

A wrong answer isn’t just wrong. The engine says which mistake it was.

2

Your weak spots, remembered

After a test, one tap makes a new one on exactly the mistakes you made.

3

Marks become a plan

Term marks become an APS, the APS becomes the courses you meet, and the courses become closing dates.

Safety, built in

Made for young people, from the start.

Checked before anyone sees it

Every Community post passes our own filters for contact details and harmful words; photos and videos are checked by an image-checking service, and post text, without the learner’s name, by a text-checking service.

Learners first

Learners are kept apart from unknown adults. Anyone can be blocked, muted or reported, and reported posts are reviewed.

An AI with guard rails

Aton answers from TRY’s own facts, keeps to schoolwork and the future, says it’s an AI, and points to help lines when a learner needs help.

Private by default

We collect only what TRY needs, never sell it, and show no adverts based on it.

Principles

The rules we build by.

Never mark a right answer wrong

The worst thing a marker can do. When TRY isn’t sure, it says so instead of guessing.

The same answer every time

A question can be made again exactly, and any verdict can be checked again later.

Built for the phone in her hand

Everyday Android phones, expensive data and patchy signal. Offline is a feature, not an extra.

Aton

An AI that uses TRY’s facts, not its imagination.

Aton understands a learner’s words and hands her TRY’s own things: a paper, a test, a bursary, a closing date. It reaches TRY’s data through a locked door, only for that learner, and it never sees a question’s answer or memo.

  • The words are the AI’s; the facts are TRY’s
  • The same rules and limits as the app
  • It says it’s an AI, and that it can make mistakes
